You should read this grueling article in the New Yorker on the life of elevators, by Nick Paumgarten. The story features a break taken by a production manager at Business Week–that lasted 41 hours. The trapping takes place near the forty-third floor of the McGraw-Hill Building, an unadorned tower added to Rockefeller Center in 1972. Also, I found the video of his ordeal, so you can get crazy with him.
